Right now, I can’t tell if I’m super upset or fucking livid.
Say that, hypothetically of course, you moved out of home shortly before you turned 21 with two people you barely knew - but knew through friends of friends. You had met one housemate briefly before. One housemate was wonderful and rational and weird and hilarious, and the other spent half the time crying over or ranting about her ex(es) and her boyfriend(s) (you didn’t mind listening and trying to help but got tired of repeating yourself after a while) and loathed cleaning with a passion (and, whether intentional or not, did a bad job of it). She was fun to be around, but there wasn’t a moment where something bad wasn’t happening to her that she had to share with everyone.
Say you had your first ever house inspection and you had to clean the house before the inspection. It was a mess. You and one housemate did a third of the house two nights before; the other housemate mopped the kitchen floor the morning after that. You came out of bed that morning and couldn’t even tell the kitchen had been cleaned. You asked her if she could please do it again when she got home, calmly pointing out the crumbs and dirt, and she frustratedly said “fine” and stormed out of the house to come back and do an equally second-rate job at cleaning it again later. That housemate then would spend most of the next half a week at her boyfriend’s, especially if you asked her if she would be home the next day (her answer would change within half an hour). You noticed that she didn’t say more than five words in a row to you or the other housemate for the next few days.
You know she’s avoiding you and your other housemate. One of the few nights of that period that she’s home, she slams her bedroom door at 2am, waking you up, and you can’t get back to sleep. You get up at 6 for work and have a shitty, shitty day, and bail on all plans for that night cos you’re so tired that you have a migraine and your vision is blurry.
Housemate begins to seem a little bit more normal. Then you ask her if she’s going to be home the next day again; no uni, no work? She says, yeah, I don’t have uni, I don’t have work. Awkwardly and hesitantly.
Hypothetically, of course, if she were to, before she left, as you were chatting with a friend/guest in the kitchen, come in, say she wasn’t actually coming home the next day, and that she’s removing herself from the two-rooms-a-week rotating cleaning roster and would just clean up her dishes after herself, would you tell her that you probably need to get together and discuss that with your other housemate? And if to that she said (as she turned around and headed for the door) that she didn’t see what needed discussing, then left, how would you feel?
I can’t see why your housemate would want to stay. She clearly isn’t happy there, is she? And you and the other housemate would probably be somewhere between super upset and fucking livid right now. No?
